Book: Jennie Devoe On the Record: Life, Music & Elvis Dust
By John Carlson, 2019
$24.26
(includes s&h)

This is the story of Jennie DeVoe, an iconic Indianapolis singer whose style embraces blues, rock, jazz and more. Hers is a classic success story about the recording-studio secretary whose big break came when, against all odds, she was chosen to sing the songs used as advertising for one of America's biggest retailers. This led to a recording career, much of it centered in England, that has produced a number of top-flight albums and no shortage of interest from major music labels. But Jennie never signed with them. Why? From the start she has insisted on following her own path, remaining in charge of her own destiny.
This book details her award-winning songwriting career, her songs' extensive use by popular television shows, and her embrace of causes, particularly those related to child- and animal-welfare. Along the way we meet a number of the people who have meant so much to her life and career, including the well-known artists for whom she has opened or performed. Learn what happens when she steps on stage in front of 20,000 people and jokingly announces, "Hi! I'm Joe Cocker!" And join her on-stage at Lilith Fair where she is embraced by some of music's favorite female performers. It's heady stuff, her husband Rob notes, to find yourself eating meatloaf in a tent, seated across from Sheryl Crow. Known for her halo of curly blonde hair, she is immediately recognizable in the city she calls home.
